The Front 9 is done and will re open tomorrow (Thursday), meaning that all 18 holes will be available tomorrow until 3! At 3 we will close the back 9 for a Boonville Pirates Girls Golf Meet. On Friday both nines will be open until we get our replacement part in (10-11am). We will then close the back nine and get it done before the weekend!

Next week’s aerification schedule
Hail Ridge Golf Course:

The time for aerification is never perfect. It is a mess, it interrupts play and it just generally is no fun. But, it is a necessity when you have the type of grass that we enjoy and has not been done in over a year. For more information on aerification of A4 creeping bent grass please read this http://www.usga.org/course-care/our-experts-explain0/why-do-we-always-aerate-when-the-greens-are-perfect-21474872028.html
This aerification will help break up the layer of organic material that A4 bentgrass is famous for creating, allowing oxygen and water to the root level. As you may recall we did a smaller version of this a few times this summer to relieve the pressure without the massive stress during hot/humid times. We will be harvesting the cores as well as top dressing (sand) heavily and rolling after aerification to reduce the impact to play as much as possible. With the disease pressure that we have experienced we will also be over seeding while we do this.
The Schedule: We are planning to aerify greens, tees, fairways and rough. We will begin with front nine on Tuesday. The front 9 will be closed during this process. We will then close the back nine on Wednesday in order to preform the same procedure. We will always have one nine open and we will re open both sides on Thursday. The entire time this is happening we will be aerifying the rough, fairways and tees. We anticipate the aerification healing completely within 2 weeks with weather cooperation. If we have a weather or mechanical issue that pushes this schedule back we will be sure to let you know!
We have done all that we can do to keep our green complexes alive during this difficult stretch. Now it is time to shift gears and look to the long tearm heath and improvement of this amazing golf course!
ALMOST FORGOT!!!
ALSO, AS WE APPRETIATE YOUR PATIENCE DURING THIS PROCESS WE WANT TO REWARD YOU! FROM MONDAY SUNDAY MORNING THROUGH SEPT 15TH WE WILL RUN A BIG SPECIAL. GOLF WILL ONLY BE OUR CART FEE ($20) AND BEER WILL BE $2/CAN! THANK YOU AGAIN!

Update on no mow and greens
As many of you have seen or heard we have been battling some difficult turf conditions. The bad news is that it looks ugly. The good news is that it is under control, healing and putts fine!
Hail Ridge sat empty for months. That was followed by a dry warm winter. That was followed by an impaired ability to run irrigation due to construction. We knew that there would be some issues, we just didn’t know which problems. And the winner of the problem pool was Anthracnose!
Anthracnose is a fungus that is active in dry, warm turf that is short on fuel. Well….. that couldn’t describe where our turf was any better.
While our circumstances for having a perfect turf year were imposable, that doesn’t mean that we got it all right. We misdiagnosed the problem not once, but twice. Had we diagnosed it correctly and taken the appropriate actions right away we could have cut the consequences in half. But sometimes this is how we learn….
So, where are we now? We have treated the disease chemically twice. We are topdressing weekly. We have deep tyned 5 times in the past 3 weeks (reduce dry spots). We have cut out and replaced some of the worst spots for more immediate recovery. We have also continued to fertilize heavily while verticutting and applying a growth regulator to encourage horizontal growth. We will also be over seeding in the coming weeks as the weather allows. We have had several experts out to ensure that our steps on the path to a speedy full recovery are the correct ones. I am happy to let you know that we have had 20% regrowth in the last 4 days alone!
Some have speculated that we haven’t watered enough, have over watered, roll to much or didn’t aerify. The is some merit to the fact that the course wasn’t aerified this spring. A4 bent grass does create a heavier layer of thatch that does need to be broken through more often than older or newer strains and it certainly would have been good to aerify. However, it wasn’t going to be done last fall and with limited access to irrigation this spring and the heat it could have led to a much larger, more immediate problem.
We appreciate everyone’s continued support as we work tirelessly to remedy this issue!!!
NO MOW UPDATE!
The original plan was to take the no mow down a couple of times this season. However, the first person that we contracted to take the no mow down was unable to fulfill this contract due to mechanical issues. So we have contracted with another larger area mower and I am happy to announce that the process has begun today!! By next week the no mow will be down to 6 inches and we are continuing to identify places we can decrease the no mow to help you out. And in places that players are less apt to hit it we can increase native areas without harming playability. We are also considering a reseed option that will grow lower and thinner while choking out noxious weeds!!!
I hope that this information helps you feel more confident in the direction that we are headed! The weather is perfect so get your butts out here and play some golf!!!!!!
Josh Black
Here is an example of a full blown anthracnose break out.

Reflections on the my father and the US Open
As many of you already know I do not watch much TV. I did turn on the US Open yesterday while plowing through some piles of paperwork. Not a big deal. Just something on in the background to prepare me for the inevitable “who is winning?”. As we are all prone to do, I lost track of time thinking that Father’s Day is approaching. I began to reflect on the past year with/without my “Old Man”. Drifting into a catatonic state I was transported into a memory of my youth. The 1990 US Open at Medinah. Some of you may remember two iconic details about that Open. The first and less memorable was that Curtis Strange had won the previous two Opens. The second was Hale Irwin’s legendary lap around the 18th green following a 45 foot birdie putt. Irwin had not won on the PGA Tour in 5 years and had won the Open 11 years earlier. These are merely frame of reference points.
Again, to know me is to know that my parents worked in the service of others relying on compensation in the afterlife, not in this pass. I would not understand what it meant to be without until I was much older as my parents consistently sacrificed to provide the best life for us. I now understand the strain that a trip from Milwaukee to Chicago and the costs that are inherent in attending a major sporting event. I would have been nearing 13 at the time, still two years from my first experience playing golf. My dad was really trying to move my interests away from football, basketball and any other game I could possibly squeeze into the daylight hours. He knew that my boundless energy, mischievous mind and fiery temper needed the social/ethical structure that golf provided long before anyone else would understand. So, I can only assume he used this need to talk my mom into allowing us to go.
I have beaten my brain with indulgence over the years, so the question of whether or not I went willingly is up for debate. But it probably took some heavy conjouling. So we traveled from our home on the corner of North Avenue and 122nd St to Chicago and the home to one of the wealthiest clubs in America. Few details about the property, golf, the weather, what we ate or drank are left. The memories that do stand out are that I snuck away and Curtis Strange took me inside of the ropes to walk to the first tee (he did not win his 3rd in a row, so I might not be good luck), Brad Faxon randomly handing me a golf ball while telling me it was time for me to start playing. And my best memory: time with my dad teaching me about a game that he loved. I will never forget the gleam in his eye as we followed Mr. Nicklaus, Palmer, The Shark, Couples. I had no idea who they were, but I knew they had to be great if my dad was excited to follow them. Two entire days of he and I wandering, laughing, eating ice cream, getting lost and finding one another.
We haven’t always gotten along, we don’t agree on many topics. In truth I would have been a tough one to parent from 16 on and not a good son/friend until my mid 30’s. He is a man who spent my youth exhausting himself helping those who could not help themselves which was hard for a boy to understand. He was prone to weight problems, being late, getting lost, fits of anger and an intense desire for “just five minutes alone!”. I didn’t always get it, but I do now. I love my dad and I miss being a few miles away. I have terrible regret about how I viewed him for many years. Our relationship today brings me much joy. He is a great dad, a wonderful Grandpa and one of the best damn friends I could ever ask for. Happy Father’s Day Rev. William Black. Thank you for the trip to the 1990 US Open and the life that I have because you made me play golf.
Josh

In Boonville and at Hail Ridge we are blessed with some of the finest teachers and coaches. Of these standouts one stands noticed above other for his dedication and strong work ethic. Rob Vanderlinden walks the walk everyday, often working long shifts with no break to ensure that all golfers have the experience we feel they deserve. In addition to his Hail Ridge duties, Rob is a dedicated teacher and the Boonville Pirates boys and girls golf coach. And now we add another wrinkle…..
We are proud to announce the functional arm of Rob and I’s new junior golf foundation Pirate Ridge. Pirate Ridge is designed to give kids access to golf no matter their social or economic background. Players who show passion and potential for greatness don’t always come from backgrounds affording them exposure to a game that can give its players so much. In addition, the game is capable of shaping young players to be self reliant, socially conscious and honest. Please have a look at this flyer and bring us your child or a child that you know could use this amazing influence!

Amazing play at CMU Conference meet… Right here at Hail Ridge!!!!
BOONVILLE, Mo. – There were playoffs, playoffs and yet more playoffs after the final round of the 2017 Heart of America Athletic Conference Men’s Golf Championship on Tuesday here at Hail Ridge Golf Course. But when all the dust had settled – and there wasn’t much after eight inches of rain fell before the tourney – Grand View University captured the team title and the Vikings’ Mitch Pfingsten took Medalist honors. GVU clinched a spot in the NAIA National Championship with the win.
There was much excitement at the end of the third round when Pfingsten and William Penn University’s Zachary Chegwidden were tied with identical 1-under-par 212 scores. The two golfers went back out on the course to settle the matter, starting with the 10th hole. Pfingsten won the hole and the title. Chegwidden grabbed second, Sergio Garcia of Mount Mercy University shot a 3-over-par 216 to place third, Myles Pfingsten of Grand View and Hunter Baggett of Culver-Stockton College tied for the fourth spot with identical 9-over-par 222 scores.

Grand View won the team championship by eight strokes, shooting a 29-over-par 881. Mount Mercy and William Penn tied for second with 37-over-par 889 scores. They, too, played a one-hole playoff with top four scores from individual players being tallied. MMU claimed second in the playoff. Culvert-Stockton placed fourth with a 49-over-par 901 and Missouri Valley grabbed fifth with a 53-over-par 905.
Central Methodist University placed ninth. After finishing fifth after the opening round and then slipping to eighth at the end of round two, the Eagles finished with a 948 score. They finished 14 strokes behind eighth-place Baker University (934) and seven strokes ahead of 10th-place Clarke University (955).
Brendan Ross (SR/Louisiana, Mo.) led CMU with a three-round score of 18-over-par 231. He finished in a four-way tie for 26th place. Teammate Kyle Sachs (FR/Troy, Mo.) (photo on right) shot a three-round score of 237 to place 35th. Ryan Rost (SR/Linn, Mo.) (photo on left) came in 39th with a 240, Greg Pitzer (SR/Louisiana, Mo.) shot a 244 and tied for 42nd and Eric Vander Linden (SO/Boonville, Mo.) scored a 246 and tied for 44th place.
Missouri Valley College’s Kaz Sakai received the Heart Men’s Golf Player of the Year plaque after the tournament, while Grand View University’s Chris Winkle and Missouri Valley’s Jordan Dickson were named Co-coaches of the Year.
The all-conference team was made up of 15 players. Missouri Valley had the most on the squad with five.
WHAT’S UP NEXT FOR CMU GOLF?
The Central Methodist men’s golf team has completed its season. The CMU women’s golf team will participate in the Heart of America Athletic Conference next Monday and Tuesday in Oskaloosa, Iowa for the women’s championship.

TOUGH CONDITIONS FOR ROUND 1 OF THE HEARTLAND CONFERENCE MEN’S CHAMPIONSHIP
It was a cold, wet, breezy day for the first two rounds of play here at Hail Ridge. While the conditions were tough, a few of the players proved tougher! The players look forward to improved scoring conditions for the final round Tuesday, May 2. Please feel free to come out and watch some amazing play!
CMU GOLFERS AT HEART CHAMPIONSHIP GALLERY
BOONVILLE, Mo. – Central Methodist University senior golfer Brendan Ross improved his play from an opening-round 76 to a second-round one-over-par 72 on Monday and stayed in contention for an all-conference honor at the 2017 Heart of America Athletic Conference Men’s Golf Championship held here at Hail Ridge Golf Course.
Ross moved up from a tie for tenth place to a tie for seventh place heading into Tuesday’s final round, as he finished with a six-over-par 148 for the tournament. He is just two strokes out of fifth place and a spot on the all-conference team.
As a team, Central Methodist was in fifth place after the opening round, shooting a 312. And despite improving their score to a 310 in the second round, the Eagles slipped three spots to eighth place after the second round. CMU shot a 54-over-par 622, but is just four shots out of sixth place.
Grand View University led after the first and second rounds, shooting a 12-over-par 580, and will head into the final round with an 11-shot lead over second-place Mount Mercy University (303-288=591). William Penn University is in third place with a 31-over-par 599, while Missouri Valley College and Culver-Stockton College are tied for fourth place with identical 40-over-par 608 scores.
In the individual medalist chase, Mitch and Myles Pfingsten of Grand View are 1-2 heading into the final round. Mitch shot a two-under-par 140, while Myles was even at 142 on the par-71 course.
Zachary Chegwidden of William Penn sits in third place with a one-over-par 143, Sergio Garcia of Mount Mercy is in fourth with a four-over-par 146 and Shawn Cook of Missouri Valley is fifth with a four-over-par 146. Ryan Keller of Culver-Stockton is one stroke ahead of Ross, with a five-over-par 147.
Players were forced to play in adverse weather conditions in the opening two rounds. When play began in the morning there was a light rain falling, blustering winds of more than 25 miles per hour were blowing and temperatures were in the lower 40s. By the end of the day the rain had stopped, but temperatures never rose above 46 and the winds gusted all day.
Central Methodist senior Ryan Rost was tied for 15th place after the opening round and was tied for 30th at the end of the day. He shot a six-over-par 77 in the first round and an eight-over par 79 in the second round to post a two-round total of 14-over-par 156. CMU freshman Kyle Sachs (pictured at right) was tied for the 32nd spot with a two-round total of 15-over-par 157.
Other scorers for the Eagles included senior Greg Pitzer, shooting a 161, which put him in 41stplace. Sophomore Eric Vander Linden sat at 166 after the first round, tied for 46th.

Pleasent Green Golf Outing This Sunday
Hail Ridge is slated for a golf outing this Sunday afternoon! There will be a shotgun start at 1pm. This will not take up the entire course and we will be utilizing the 9-18 for the start. This means that the we are blocking the tee sheet from 9 until 11 and from 1:10 until 3:30. That is the plan as of now. We are not sure what the weather will allow for and if the plan changes we will update you as soon as possible!
We will also have several teams here playing practice rounds for Monday-Tuesday’s CMU Conference Championship, so set up your times as soon as you can!
The Heartland Conference Championship will be held at Hail Ridge Monday and Tuesday. Monday they will play 36 holes, so the golf course will be closed all day. On Tuesday they will all go off of the first tee beginning at 9am. This means that the first tee will be available by 1pm. Also, they are asking for any volunteers who might be able volunteer to spot on the course. If you would be willing please give Josh a call at 6608822223

2017 CMU Eagle Open
BOONVILLE, Mo. – The Central Methodist University men’s and women’s golf teams shot consistent scores in the two-day CMU Eagle Open held at the Hail Ridge Golf Course. Tiger at Augusta? Chamblee wouldn’t be surprised
With one week to go before the year’s first major, Tiger Woods remains missing in action.
Just days after his agent Mark Steinberg said in a statement that he and Woods were not “in a situation to even talk about playing in the Masters now,” Woods said last week that he is “trying everything” to get back to competition.
Of course, Woods hasn’t played a competitive round since withdrawing from the Dubai Desert Classic in January.
And so, during a teleconference Tuesday morning previewing the Masters, Golf Channel analysts Brandel Chamblee and Colin Montgomerie were asked the following question: I think it’s an easy question, but do either of you see any chance that Tiger plays?
“I do. I do,” Chamblee answered. “If you can believe anything that you read on social media – I know that his coach has been down there, and they’ve been hitting a lot of golf balls down in Palm Beach. The way I understand it, he’s been practicing quite diligently. So it wouldn’t surprise me if Tiger showed up at Augusta National.”
For his part, Montgomerie said that if Woods does show up, he hopes fans don’t see the 14-time major champ bowing out after “77-78 and going home from there.”
